us stock market, trading strategy

Dear Member:

The DOW lost a little ground this week and the NASDAQ gained a little less than 1%. We were able to jump in and out of a few trades this week and close out 5 winners. We are fairly confident that many of you posted better gains than reflected on the Trade Table.

We have open positions with MRK (average price of $29.12); USB (average price of $28.93) and Dell (average price of $36.11).

We are getting some letters with respect to our long-term positions with CSCO and WMT. Obviously, the intent in any position we enter is to get in and out of the position and take a profit on small moves. As we say on our website: "Success Trading service delivers quality trading ideas for the elite investor that has the financial wherewithal and market nimbleness to profit on small moves in a stock's price." Well, when that strategy doesn't work, we are left holding a stock for some time once in awhile. It has happened in the past. It will happen in the future. We believe the strategy on these types of positions is to hold them and let them get back near our entry price. This has worked on many occasions. And, a few times it hasn't and we have recorded the loss. Since our strategy is to enter position in quality stocks, holding them generally isn't too big of a concern for us.

But, there is another option. As we have written about several times in the past, writing covered calls against these "hold" positions can also help you dig out of a position. We have had members write us and tell us that they have sold (ie, written) covered calls sufficiently to sell CSCO for a gain.

In the past, we have purposely avoided sending alerts to write covered calls on these long-term plays. However, in response to several members' requests, we will provide our thoughts on the timeliness of covered call plays on CSCO and WMT. If you are currently holding CSCO or WMT and would like us to inform you via email when we believe it may be a good time to write covered call options against these positions, please send us an email at csco@investbilling.com or wmt@investbilling.com to get on the applicable list. If you have both, please write to both email addresses in separate emails.

Have a great week!
